Xuanzang was a Buddhist monk who embarked on a seventeen years journey from China to the birthplace of Buddhism in India to seek the Buddhist sutras. After crossing over deserts, snow-covered mountains, vast wilderness, and frozen lakes all by himself, he returned from his enlightening voyage with 657 of the invaluable texts. Xuanzang's journey was the inspiration for the novel Journey to the West.
