Nagajuna, who was born into a Brahman family in Southern India, was famous for his intelligence. There was almost nothing he didn't know in the fields of geography, astronomy, astrology, divination, and even sorcery. But his heart was filled with arrogance and frivolousness, too. After losing his three  best friends in a mischief, he became a monk to purge himself from lust. He studied thousands of sutras and later composed the famous Madhyamaka-sastra and other works.
